The short version
This is my personal résumé site. It has no accounts, no forms and no comments, and it doesn't ask you for anything. I use Google Analytics to count page views and to see which outside links people click, such as GitHub or LinkedIn. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser as soon as the page loads. There is no cookie banner. Every part of the site works if you block Google Analytics.
What is collected
By Google Analytics
When a page loads, your browser sends Google:
- the page address and title, and the page you came from (the referrer)
- browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language
- a random ID stored in a cookie, so repeat visits from the same browser can be grouped
- when you visited and how long the page was open
- your IP address. Google says Google Analytics uses it to estimate your city and country and does not store it.
When you click a link to another website, Google also receives that link's address and domain.
Analytics is set up to record page views and outbound link clicks only. It does not record scrolling, searches, form use, video plays or downloads.
The cookies are _ga and _ga_V64QT2T9EG. Each lasts up to two years and is renewed on every visit.
By the hosting provider
The site runs on Railway. Like any web server, Railway's servers receive your IP address, the page you asked for and your browser type with every request, and may record them in server logs. I can see those logs. I use them only to fix problems, not to identify visitors. Railway decides how long the logs are kept.
Not collected
The site has no sign-up, contact form or newsletter. Its database holds my own résumé content and nothing about visitors. The site sets no cookies of its own.
If you email me through the Email link, your message goes to my inbox like any other email. That's separate from this site.
Why
To find out whether anyone visits, which pages they view and which outside links they follow. For example, it shows whether people click through to my GitHub projects. Analytics can't tell me who you are or why you clicked. I don't use it for advertising.
Who receives it
- Google receives the analytics data and processes it on its servers, which may be outside your country. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- Railway hosts the site and handles every request.
- Me. I see Google Analytics reports, which show totals and trends, not names.
I have turned off Google signals and the setting that shares this site's analytics data with other Google products. I don't sell or share the data with anyone else.
Detailed analytics data is deleted after two months. Summary reports, such as monthly visit totals, stay in Google Analytics.
Your choices
- Block it. A content or tracker blocker, or your browser's tracking protection, will usually stop Google Analytics. The site works the same without it.
- Google's opt-out add-on. The Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on stops Google Analytics on every site, in browsers that support it.
- Clear or block cookies. Deleting the
_gacookies resets the random ID. Blocking cookies for this site stops new ones being set.
There is no consent banner, and analytics starts when the page loads. The site doesn't change its behavior for Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals. Your browser or an extension may still block analytics when those are on.
Analytics data is tied to a random ID, not your name, so I can't look you up. If you want your analytics data removed, email me the value of your _ga cookie and I'll delete the matching data in Google Analytics.
